How To Choose The Right Water Softener Salt

How To Choose The Right Water Softener Salt

Are you a water softener owner? Have you ever experienced checking on the salt level and that tiny little lake of water is floating above the salt? You realize "oh no," you need to get to the store ASAP. We have all been there. Once you are at the store you are confronted with all the different types of salt. Isn't salt just supposed to be salt?

Who would have thought salt would be so confusing? Block, Rock, Pellets? Which is better: evaporated or solar? Or how about potassium chloride (isn't that salt?) vs salt. It's so confusing, right? Your best option is to choose the bag of salt that says "highest level of purity." Spending a little more money up front for high quality means fewer cleaning and maintenance issues later.

As a general maintenance rule: Make sure you are checking your tank at least once a month. Salt in the tank should always be around 3-4 inches ABOVE the water but at least 4 inches BELOW the top of the tank. Always make sure that you are loosening or breaking up any encrusted salt before adding new. If the salt has formed into one large block, add a little hot water to make it easier to remove. Lastly, if you are one of the "lucky ones" that have well water it is A MUST that you have Rust Defense added to the salt you are using.
